Q8795 Red & Tobacco Dyed Green Martha Washington c.1850 90 x 90 PA $5,200 What a wonderful find for collectors of early American quilts and lovers of early dyes and fabric. The elegant palette and fine execution of the popular Martha Washington pattern with its triple border brings this gorgeous quilt into an over-the-top category. Gorgeous solid red is combined with a tobacco dyed solid green and comprise the only two fabrics used on the front of the quilt. The green exhibits a beautiful gradation to khaki in areas throughout the quilt where the tobacco dye has “moved” and left khaki behind. It is a fabulous look which achieves a stunning effect on this fabulous piece of graphic art. Blocks measure 5 3/8” square and are arranged with vibrant effect in the Martha Washington pattern. The design is then surrounded by a triple border consisting of a 1 ¾” solid red, a 1 ¾” double sawtooth and an outer 1 ¾” border of tobacco dyed green. All precisely hand pieced and finely hand quilted in ½” cross hatch stitches in the large triangles and ½” parallel lines in the small triangles and borders using black thread. The backing is a gorgeous red and black cotton plaid (see detail image) that is a lovely complement to the quilt’s design and palette. A separate hand applied tobacco dyed green ¼” binding finishes the edge of this quilt. Startlingly beautiful and vivid in intensity, this is a wonderful piece of early American textile art. Q8649 Red & White Lemon Peel / Rob Peter to Pay Paul c. 1870 73 x 88 Maine $2,900 A wonderful early pattern is showcased on this very graphic red and white quilt. Just two fabrics were used: a red and dark pink pattern, and solid white. This indicates the maker was probably from an affluent family as enough of this fabric was purchased to create this quilt rather than making use of “scrap” fabrics on hand. Blocks measure 6 ½” square and are both hand and machine pieced. Curved pieces are more difficult to execute well so the creator of this quilt was an experienced seamstress. Quilting is stitched entirely by hand in echo outline and parallel lines throughout. The backing is white and the ½” binding is treadle machine topstitched in the same red fabric as used on the front. The end result is a harmonious and graphic piece of textile art. This is a wonderful quilt for use on a bed or would be equally as beautiful hung on a wall. Professionally hand washed by Betsey and in excellent condition. Quilts are always sent on approval. |

Sixteen 11 ½ inch appliquéd medallions, each with 4 hearts in the center, are surrounded by an 8 1/2 inch border crowned with four long floral tipped swags. Skillful hand quilting consists of cross hatching in the appliqued medallion squares, double parallel lines in the swag border accented with teardrop quilting. Q8528 Red and Green Ocean Waves c.1880 81 x 81 Massachusetts $1,800 Arriving just in time for the holidays, this graphically wonderful Ocean Waves quilt has been used just enough to give it the comforting softness of age while still maintaining its excellent condition. Ocean Waves is a very “North Atlantic Coast” pattern, usually seen in some combination of blues and whites, or scrap assortments on a solid color background. This quilt is more unusual, having been hand pieced from Turkey red, overdyed green calicoes, and a variety of red plaids. Please note that the Turkey red is a blue red, not an orange red; this is quite a difficult color to accurately photograph. The 6 ¼ inch Turkey red joining blocks have been hand quilted with double lines, alternating direction from block to block. The 3 x 2 ¼ x 2 ¼ inch triangles have been hand outline quilted. The 5 ¾ inch border is a deeper overdyed green calico, and includes a 3/8 separately applied Turkey red binding. The border has been quilted with diagonal double lines. The wholecloth backing is a wonderful burgundy floral with ecru flowers and tan highlights. Professionally hand washed by Betsey, this festive quilt is ready for your use! |

| Please view the detail photos (click image above) for more accurate colors. F149 Stuffed Cherry Wreath c. 1845 approx. 16 x 16 New York $250 The two blocks pictured come from the same quilt. When this quilt was originally created, all of the wreaths were a solid overdyed green cotton, but not from the same bolt of fabric. Overdyed green fabric was made by dying the fabric blue and then dying it again with yellow, or vice versa. Over time, overdyed green will sometimes fade to the color of its first layer of dye. Therefore, one of the greens has lost its upper yellow dye layer and is now blue, and the other green is losing its upper blue dye layer and is leaning toward a yellow green. Interesting! All originally hand appliqued and hand quilted in outline, clamshell, feathers and flower motifs. The stuffed cherries have been restored with same date Turkey red cotton, and both fragments have been bound with the same Turkey red in a ¼ inch separately applied binding. We now have three blocks available; two with yellow green leaves and one with blue leaves. Please feel free to purchase any number of these wonderful fragments! |
