Q8302 Victorian Crazy Quilt with Hand Painted American Flag
c.1885
38 x 54
New England
$3,900

The 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition was a big event in Victorian society. One of the most popular exhibits was the Japanese pavilion with its fascinating crazed ceramics and asymmetrical art. During the height of the Victorian era, homes could not have enough embellishment. Early quilts made in the crazy quilt style were show pieces, often made as lap robes or to decorate the parlor.

The culture of the times was full of symbolism, poetry and romance. Crazy quilting allowed women to display their artistic abilities in needlework, oil painting, and arrangement of embellishments. Silks, silk velvets, wools and chenille fabrics, along with silk, cotton, wool and chenille threads of every color, were used to incorporate names, dates, pictures, and a wide assortment of symbols. Although crazy style quilts may appear haphazard they were carefully planned.

This wonderful and patriotic Victorian crazy quilt is beautifully embellished with original oil paintings. Of primary importance is the American flag with 30 stars. Other oil paintings include a woman surrounded by daisies, a basket filled with flowers, a dog leaning over a fence, a log cabin, and a floral bouquet with "love" on the ribbon.

The dense embroidered embellishment is in all different colors of cotton twist and fills the interiors of the silks as well as the seams. This exquisite and diminutive crazy quilt is comprised of c.1850's - c.1880's silks. The quilt has a yellow backing and is reverse tied with ribbon bows. This work of art is in fabulous condition. All of our quilts can be sent to you on approval.

Q8730 African American Log Cabin Variation
c.1920-40
70 x 80
Atlanta, GA
$2,600

This graphically appealing African American quilt is comprised of solids, prints and geometrics in various shapes, sizes and colors. The maker’s spirit and zest for life are displayed through her art. Similar to one adaptation of a conventional log cabin at first glance but upon closer inspection we clearly see that the strip pieced log blocks are assembled in a classic African American style. The piecing is such that fabrics of a similar pattern, in block formation, are not always contiguous.

Each pieced block is different from its neighbor in number and width of ‘logs’ with blocks varying in size from 10” to 13” wide. Solid tan sashing with medium blue connecting squares join the blocks. The blue blocks stop the flow of the tan sashing. This interruption of energy and the various sizes of pieces is intentional.

The backing is a white cotton turned over to the front forming the hand stitched binding. Hand quilting on this quilt is a combination of arc and loosely parallel lines using white string. This special quilt has seen some gentle use, yet is still in excellent condition.

This African American quilt is a wonderful find...... clean and ready to use. Quilts are always sent on approval.

$1200

What a wonderful rendition of the classic Grandmother’s Flower Garden quilt. This 20th century beauty contains a varied mix of solids, plaids, florals, and calico fabrics from the 1920’s. Each hexagon measures 1 5/8 inch per side, or 1 7/8 inches across. The center hexagon of each "flower"is a solid fabric coordinating with the colors in the outer petals. Of special note is the unusual mustard path which surrounds and unites the flowers.

Your queen bed would be stunning with this Flower Garden quilt turned the 86 inch width from right to left.....There would be 13 inches over the sides!

This beautiful quilt in excellent condition is entirely hand outline stitched around each hexagon....hundreds of hexagons! A white cotton is used for the backing. The detailed edging of the quilt is enhanced with a pillowcase edge done by hand with tiny quilting stitches.

A lovely and bright quilt that is soft and clean and ready for your home. Professionally hand washed by Betsey and ready for you to see on approval.

The beautiful early striped double pink calico fabric makes this quilt extra special, and really sets off the contrasting overdyed green calico fabric. The green blocks are 1½ inches square, and the 7½ inch border is comprised of a 1¾ inch green and pink sawtooth border, a 4 inch pink border, followed by another pink and green sawtooth border. The ¼ inch separately applied binding is a pink check on three sides, and a pink stripe on fourth. The backing is white cotton. All hand pieced and hand quilted with double diagonal lines, 1 inch crosshatching, and sunflower motifs in the pink joining blocks. Professionally hand washed by Betsey, please ask her for more details.

Q8198 Variable 9 Patch or Extended 9 Patch

74 x 76

$750

Vibrant pink and pristine white cottons in unused condition make this fun quilt perfect to cheer any room! The extended or variable 9 patch pattern gives such a wonderful feeling of movement which is accentuated here by the precise piecing of a skilled needlewoman. The maker was also creative in her hand quilting as, along with outline stitches, she created her own patterns resembling figure eight double cables and crescent moon teardrops and used them systematically throughout the quilt. Penciled quilting lines are still visible in areas of the quilt. Backed in the same pure white fabric as used on the front it has a 3/8 inch applied binding in the same gorgeous pink as is used in the border and 9 patch squares.

This wonderful piece would be easy to add to an already established décor. Solids are so comfortable mixed with plaids, florals, calicoes or stripes…. a few of these together create a more sophisticated look. Pristine, crisp and happy, this quilt has been professionally hand washed by Betsey.

Q8517 Homespun Wool and Turkeywork Folk Art
Dated November 1886 and initialed RAP
62 x 88
New Hampshire
$2,600

What an opportunity to acquire a purely original piece of textile folk art, signed and dated by the artist. In unused condition, two lengths of hand loomed wool homespun were seamed together to form this bedcover. There is a possibility that the wool was hand carded as well. Red, teal green and dark green wool yarn was then used to create the turkeywork embellishments. The designs were arranged in a general four square format, and consist of potted flowering plants and two buildings with four windows in each. We can conjecture on the symbolism of these designs; are the plants folk art Tree of Life symbols? Are the buildings perhaps schoolhouses used as symbols of learning, or perhaps representations of the maker’s home? On three sides of the coverlet, a 1 ½ inch fringe made from same wool yarn as used on the embellishments has been attached with red wool yarn fly stitching. This piece can be used as original art for the wall or a truly original folk art bedcovering for beds up to queen size.

Q8453 Double Irish Chain with Double Border
c.1885
79 x 80
Lancaster County, Pennsylvania
$1,900

A bold color palette of deep navy, lemon yellow and red make this quilt equally perfect for modern as well as traditional homes. In unused condition, this quilt was hand pieced in a Double Irish Chain pattern and finished with an unusual double border comprised of large navy and yellow triangles followed by a 3 ½ inch red border. The navy binding was only applied to the back of the quilt, giving the front the appearance of pillowcase edging. The backing is a beautiful circa 1885 wholecloth taupe and brown pinstripe with a muted pinkish taupe polka dot overlay. All hand quilted with cables in the red outer border, a funky organic leaf/flower shape in inner border, crosshatching in the Irish chain, and daisy medallions in the joining blocks. Professionally hand washed by Betsey.
