Q8133 Carpenter's Wheel
c.1925
74 X 94
CT

A stunning Dresden Plate quilt unique in both construction and design. The wonderful 8 ½ inch plates are embellished with black buttonhole stitching which also serves to applique them to the white ground. Lovely and unique this quilt enjoys various floral bouquet prints in the center of each plate, with a circle using the same floral bouquets appliqued in between each plate. The 'spokes' comprising each plate include a fabulous variety of 1920's calicos. The piecing of the Dresden Plates and the applique work are all by hand with the blocks assembled by treadle sewing machine.

As a summer weight quilt it has no batting and is constructed using a medium weight white cotton for both front and back giving it a lovely look and feel. This beautifully crafted textile has three sides with 4 ½ inch scallops or 'tongues' decorating the edge - the 'head' of the quilt is straight edged for placing either over or under pillows. The scallops are also hand embellished with black buttonhole stitching. Great care was taken with the cutting and execution of the fussy cut florals and embellishment stitching. Beautifully finished both front and back this summer spread would be gorgeous on a bed. In perfect condition. From the Marr Family of Connecticut. Professionally hand washed by Betsey it is ready for your home. Ask to see it on approval.

Q6468 Funky Log Cabin Courthouse Steps
c.1850
72 x 80 (182.9 x 203.2 cm)
Found in PA, made in New England

A wonderful piece of abstract art in excellent condition, this log cabin quilt arranged in the classic Courthouse Steps pattern has a personality all its own. Made from wool and silk challis, this hand made antique quilt’s striking colors make it unusual, its surprising bits of plaid, striped and floral fabric just add to its uniqueness. Each 11 x 11 ½ inch block is made up of 1 – 1 ¼ inch width logs with varying hues used for the chimneys – including fuschia! Foundation pieced and hand quilted along each seam.

The ½ inch binding on two sides is an applied burgundy wool challis, and the wholecloth c.1860 cotton backing is a brown, burgundy and ecru small scale squares and dots pattern which folds over to the front on opposite sides to form the other two bindings. There are a few “original” moth holes - ask Betsey for more details on this one.

Q6444 Unusual Triple Irish Chain
c.1870
72 x 88 (182.9 x 223.5 cm)
Indiana

The warm tones of this quilt are very comforting, with the majority of fabrics in shades of green, blue, and rose. At first glance, this quilt has the look of an Ocean Wave pattern using squares instead of the more typical triangles. However, it appears to be a Triple Irish Chain with an unusual joining block setting. The quilter also concentrated her deepest colors at the top and bottom of the quilt, creating a unique visual effect. All hand pieced, the deep overdyed green calico joining blocks are 5 inch square, and the separately applied 3/8 inch binding is from that same overdyed green. The backing is linen homespun and the corners of this quilt have been softly rounded. The hand quilted crosshatching alternates between a 1 ¼ inch grid in the squares to a smaller ¾ inch grid in the green joining blocks. An assortment of brown, cream, mauve, and navy quilting thread was used to match the fabrics on front. Professionally hand washed by Betsey.

A striking palette of salmon and deep olive green for the center medallion with squares of celery green, two tones of yellow, a deeper salmon rose, pale lavender, pale pink and an oyster shell gray.

Machine pieced and hand quilted in outline stitches throughout with Herringbone stitching in the outer top and bottom salmon borders. What a graphically wonderful quilt! The color impact of the deeply dyed indigo with tiny white stars combined with vibrant vegetable dyed chrome orange is just stunning! The blocks are 11 inches square, with 5 3/8 inch indigo sashing and chrome joining blocks. Interestingly, the lilies in just one of the blocks have had a double pink fabric substituted for the chrome. The triple border is comprised of approximately 2 ¾ inch strips of chrome, indigo, and blue striped shirting fabrics, and finished with a 5/8 inch chrome binding. The wholecloth backing is the same blue striped shirting. Entirely hand pieced and hand quilted in outlines, diagonal lines and daisy medallions. Professionally hand washed by Betsey.
