This fabulous Turkey red calico and white quilt was made by a very skilled needlewoman. Entirely hand pieced and precisely hand quilted this beautiful design is effective when seen close up and folded on a quilt rack and has stunning impact when fully open and viewed from a distance. This quilt contains the same Turkey red calico throughout indicating purchased yardage was used rather than scrap fabrics from other sewing projects, and therefore most probably came from an affluent family. The backing is white with a ¼ inch applied turkey red calico binding. Quilting stitches include cross hatch, daisy and freehand leaves.

A wonderful find for any history buff, this quilt was made in the pieced pattern Burgoyne Surrounded. The name comes from the Revolutionary War battle of Saratoga, in which 5,800 British troops under the command of General John Burgoyne were surrounded by the American army and forced to surrender on October 17, 1777. This American victory was the turning point in the war, and during one of the periods of colonial revival in the 1800’s, a quilt pattern showing a large square surrounded by smaller squares was created and named for the unfortunate General Burgoyne.

A stunning red and white quilt for your collection it would be fabulous on a bed or hung as fantastic graphic art on your wall. Professionally hand washed by Betsey you can have this quilt sent to you for review in your home before purchase.
