CON DB2 Postage Stamp Variation with Sampler Quilting

c.1880
67 x 82 (170.2 x 208.3 cm)
MO
$3,200

A unique quilt with provenance, this lovely Postage Stamp comes to us on consignment from the descendants of the maker. There is a hand written note accompanying this quilt from the maker's granddaughter written in 1965 stating hers and her grandmother's names, date and place it was created.

This whimsical adaptation of the Postage Stamp design has various sizes of white octagons stitched among the postage stamps which at first glance appear to be squares. The angled corners, however, result in each block having eight sides. The blocks are hand pieced into the postage stamp design, not appliqued on top of it, adding a level of difficulty in the execution of this wonderful quilt. Each postage stamp square is a little gem measuring just 3/4 inch in size. They include a wide variety of calico, striped, geometric, solid, and floral cottons from circa 1880 and earlier.

Along with her whimsical variation of the postage stamp pattern the maker chose to include sampler quilting in her white blocks. A lovely design element that makes this quilt stand apart from its sister Postage Stamp quilts. Some of the patterns and original designs she used include; florals with echo outline stitching, vining leaves, diagonal cross hatching, diamond in the square, double line parallel lines, and pinwheels.

The backing is white muslin and the applied treadle machine topstitched 3/8 inch binding consists of two black on white mourning prints. A special and unique work of art that was used, lovingly cared for and in perfect condition. It would be fabulous on a bed or as a piece of decorative whimsy on your wall or settee. Professionally hand washed by Betsey this quilt can be shipped to you on approval for review in the privacy of your home. Provenance to go to the buyer upon sale.
