CON DQ Signature Block Doll Quilt with Red Sashing
19 x 25
This sweet c.1850 signature block doll quilt contains some even earlier fabrics in the pieced top. The backing, although worn, is quite early as well, dating to c.1830 or possibly earlier. Signature blocks measure 4 inches square and are separated by a lively red black and white cotton print 1 5/8 inches wide. There are a few ‘original’ mends which we have not touched that add a certain sweetness to this piece as they were probably done by the mommy of the doll for whom it was made.
The lovely and early brown on ecru striped hand applied binding shows some wear and one corner of the sashing is open to the backing fabric but the binding remains intact, all attesting to the fact that this beloved quilt was used and loved. There is no batting or quilting so this little quilt in original condition is a lightweight treasure. Professionally hand washed by Betsey.
