CONET1 Fabulous Four Post Maine Quilt

c. 1835
113 x 108 inches (31 x 61" tail)
Maine
$5,900

When this exquisite quilt masterpiece was constructed it was just about the time that Maine became an independent state from Massachusetts. Due to the selection of mostly chintz fabrics, we unquestionably know that this was a very affluent family. During that era, in Maine, there were many affluent families due to shipbuilding and trade. It was a prosperous time for many in the State. This quilt came to me directly from the family; the name will be provided upon its sale.
The fabrics on the quilt date from c.1780 to c.1830. Most of the fabrics used are pictorial chintz. In addition, we have hand painted block prints, early roller prints, etc. All dyes used would have been of a vegetable base. No doubt this is a quilt for a collector. Ironically, due to the dimensions, this quilt will perfectly fit today's queen size beds. I have seen some amazing queen size reproductions of early poster beds that this quilt would look stunning on.
Comprised of 8-1/2" blocks which alternate between pieced Lemoyne blocks and whole cloth pictorial blocks. All blocks are on point. There is a 10" whole cloth pictorial border on the two sides and the bottom. The backing used for this quilt is linen, which is indicative of the era. The quilting, which is not the important factor on this quilt, is a herringbone pattern, approximately 1" apart throughout the quilt. There is a 1-3/8" border turned over to the back for the binding on the two sides of the bed. The bottom and the tail have a 3" chintz border of the same pictorial fabric.
There is one yellow 2-1/2" square that shows no connection to the other fabrics. By this I mean it is a simple, early cotton block print. A symbol that the quilter has placed purposely that she believed that only God is perfect, and to show her humility in the midst of this luxury.
We are happy to send this mint condition, museum quality quilt for your at-home approval.
