What a perfect opportunity to acquire a classic Crazy quilt with all the exuberance of the Victorian era. This coverlet is typical of many Victorian Crazy quilts, as it was made without batting or backing. These silk quilts were made to showcase the embellishments, not for use as bed coverings. This particular coverlet was originally foundation pieced on checked silk and bound with blue and black silk binding. Silks in prints and solids, checks and plaids were embellished with silk twist along all seam lines, and further embellished with embroidered triple rings, horses, flowers, star, birds, butterflies, and an anchor. An American flag ribbon and skillful floral oil paintings add to the variety of embellishments. The 5 inch pieced border was formed from rectangles and squares, and contains multiple initials and dates, as can be seen in the photographs. The silk binding is approximately 3/8, and was restored on two sides prior to coming to Betsey. This quilt would make a fabulous piece of wall art as it is, but if desired, the price leaves space for restoration, backing and binding. Please ask Betsey for more information.
