Early silk quilts were normally created in an affluent family environment. Silk fabrics of this time period were usually imported and very expensive. The creator of this quilt would have needed free time to do this work, as a silk quilt was only for "show" and not to be used for warmth. The backing of this finished fragment is an early chintz dress lining. Again, a sign of affluence. This little piece comes from a quilt that was unused but damaged. We took the perfect part to make this fragment and bound it with same date black silk fabric. A wonderful way to display this piece is either as an exquisite table runner or wall hanging.
