In this political season, let us not forget that in the nineteenth century women had not yet obtained the right to vote. However, many women voiced their opinions through their pieced or appliqued quilts. The Whig’s Defeat pattern is one such example! The Whig party was formed in the early 1830’s to oppose Andrew Jackson and the Democrats, but fell apart 30 years later during the political fight over the expansion of slavery into the territories. The anti-slavery faction of the party managed to block their own incumbent President Fillmore from running for a second term, but were defeated in the 1852 presidential election against Democrat Franklin Pierce. This wonderful Whig’s Defeat has been hand pieced using Turkey red, deep khaki tan, and white cotton. A trumpet vine flower has been hand appliqued and treadle machine top-stitched in the corner of each block, creating an interesting circular motif in between the classic pieced Whig’s Defeat blocks. Entirely hand quilted with double line ferns and four petaled motifs in the white background, and single outline quilted in all other areas. The 3/8 inch separately applied binding is khaki tan cotton, and the backing is white. Professionally hand washed by Betsey.
