An early textile collector's dream, this large quilt contains a gorgeous array of fabrics from the 1840's. Note the substitution in the top sashing; a sure sign of a time when quilters used what was available if they came up short on fabric before completing their creations. The backing is a wholecloth brown stripe and geometric print; making this quilt totally reversible. The extravagant use of such costly fabric tells us this quilt was made by a wealthy family. Early beds in New England were 52 inches square, and high off the floor. Quilts at that time extended from the floor to the top of the mattress, which is why we have quilts which will fit today’s oversized queen mattresses. A fabulous find!
