Q8488 Log Cabin Courthouse Steps
c.1865
74 x 82
Lancaster, Pennsylvania
$4,400
A wonderfully sophisticated piece of textile art in unused condition, this log cabin quilt has a fantastic array of wool challis fabrics dating from the 1850’s through c.1865, arranged in a classic Courthouse Steps pattern. Each block is only 4½ inches wide, comprised of logs approximately 5/8 of an inch wide foundation pieced by hand with vertical hand quilted along some of the blocks. The ½ inch binding is burgundy cotton, and the circa 1870 wholecloth backing is a brown and cream small scale floral. The quilter was quite frugal with her backing fabric; hand piecing the lengths to include the seam allowance so not a bit was wasted!
