A rare opportunity to acquire an original, very early bassinet quilt in fabulous condition. The overall pattern arrangement of this little quilt is very reminiscent of early center medallion adult size quilts. Center medallion patterns were popular until approximately 1840, but the scalloped border is rare for this time frame. Entirely hand pieced, embroidered and quilted in outline, crosshatching and chevron patterns. The quality of fabrics in this bassinet quilt reflects the affluence of the family; a lovely assortment of early turkey red, yellow, overdyed green, and cream calicoes, along with an early double pink. Please note that the overdyed green is actually a few shades lighter than the photographs show, but the other fabric colors are accurate. The wholecloth backing was created from the same cream calico as used on the front. The center medallion measures 16 ½ x 17 inches, with a cream four quadrant flower appliqued onto a Turkey red calico Lemoyne Star and finished with buttonhole and chain stitching in cream silk thread. The star is surrounded by overdyed green calico and bordered by double pink Delectable Mountains. Bordered again by yellow calico, with a 3 inch sawtooth border of green and cream, followed by a 3¼ inch zigzag border of green, cream, and Turkey red calico. This quilt was then bounded with a 2 ¼ inch cream calico scallop and finished with a ¼ inch separately applied Turkey red binding. A totally unique, early piece of textile art! Professionally hand washed by Betsey.
