Q8529 Broken Dishes/ Nine Patch

The pattern of this great indigo quilt is an unusual adaptation of a Nine Patch. Tiny 3 ¼ inch Broken Dishes blocks have been hand pieced from fabrics ranging in age from 1860 to 1870. Deep indigo polka dot fabric alternates with the Broken Dishes to form larger Nine Patch blocks. The same circa 1860 indigo was used in the 10 ½ inch joining blocks and quilted by hand with 1 ½ inch crosshatching. The remainder of the quilt was hand quilted with diagonal lines. The backing is 19th century homespun ecru cotton, and the 3/8 inch binding was turned over from the back to the front. The backing fabric and style of binding point to a possible Kentucky origin. A wonderful find for an indigo quilt. Professionally hand washed by Betsey.
