Q8573 White and Blue Chambray Double Irish Chain
Dated 1915
77 x 78
Dauphin County, Pennsylvania
$1,900
Skillfully hand pieced and quilted, this classic two color combination of blue chambray and white would make a wonderful addition to any room! In unused condition, this Double Irish Chain has a 4 ½ inch triple border and has been hand quilted with a lemon peel motif in the white joining blocks and crosshatching in the chain squares. A wonderful bonus is the inscription “pieced by Mother in her 80th yr. 1915” stitched in the lower right white border in light blue pearl cotton. The lemon peel pattern is very indicative of New England quilting; leading us to speculate whether “Mother”, the quilt, or both traveled to Pennsylvania. In an interesting reverse of conventional bindings, this blue 3/8 inch binding has been sewn on the back by machine and then meticulously whipstitched on the front of the quilt. The backing is white cotton. Professionally hand washed by Betsey.
