Another incredible find for Betsey’s clients! This unique and stunning antique quilt in excellent condition is from the Chester County area of Pennsylvania and showcases this quilter’s unique artistic perspective and advanced skill. She took a traditional oak leaf and reel pattern and, using a color palette popular from 1835 to 1865, made it her own by adding her favorite florals and a unique border. Each 15 ½ inch square block has a skillfully hand appliqued overdyed green calico oak leaf and reel with a solid Turkey red cotton bud, a Turkey red tulip, a double pink calico tulip and a solid Turkey red daisy with soft blue calico inner petals and a yellow center!
A somewhat gothic in feel, 9 ½ inch wide papercut outer border surrounds the 16 inner blocks and makes for a very intriguing and complex design overall. Complimenting the intricacy of the design the simple but fine hand quilting is in outline and straight line stitches set 5/8 inches apart over the entire piece. The backing is in fine white cotton with a 3/8 inch hand applied Turkey red binding.
Vibrant, graphic and full of life this antique quilt tells us of a quilter who loved flowers and intricate design, was skilled at her art and was not afraid to show it!
