What a wonderful find for collectors of early American quilts and lovers of early fabrics! The elegant rendition of the popular Variable Stars pattern with its sumptuous border brings this gorgeous quilt into an over-the-top category. Comprised of thirty six 9 1/2 inch star blocks set on point which are pieced with rich and sophisticated fabrics. The large range of prints include small sprigged flowers, stripes, dots, organic prints and geometrics. The color palette used in the blocks consists of burgundy, rose, teal, lavender, blue and red. The stars are set among gorgeous shades of browns, taupes, blues, pink and even orange and are offset by off white joining blocks.
The circa 1840 nine inch border fabric is an elegant combination of browns, taupes and cream showcased in two elegant rows of variegated twining leaves surrounding a windowpane plaid with floral sprigs. Quilting on this regal piece consists of finely executed floral swags in the joining blocks, 4 row cabling in the wide border and parallel lines in the star blocks.
The binding is formed by the front border turning over to the back side and then hand stitched down. The backing is an early off white homespun. What an incredible textile perfect for a special bed or gorgeous art for a large wall space. This quilt has been professionally hand washed by Betsey and as always can be sent to you on approval.
