Q8909 Patriotic Mariner's Compass Variation
c.1865
71 x 80 (180.3 x 203.2 cm)
$3,800

What a fabulous Civil War era cotton quilt with wonderful graphics! This fantastic quilt in a variation of the Mariner's Compass pattern showcases this quilter’s wonderful sense of color placement. Triple sashing separates the solid red, white and indigo blue print starbursts, or compasses, and is comprised of two solid white strips 1 3/8 inches wide on either side of a 1 1/4 inch wide center strip of red polka dots on white. Small white squares in the sashing visually separate the blocks to best effect and measure 1 1/4 inches square.

Hand pieced blocks set on point measure 13 1/2 x 14 inches and are comprised of solid turkey red, a small scale indigo and white print, solid ecru, and a small scale pale gray dot on white. Surrounding the inner design is a border approximately 2 inches wide in the same red dots on white cotton used for the sashing. See detail images. Hand quilting consists of diagonal lines in the sashing spaced 1/2 inch apart, parallel straight lines in the indigo print around the compasses, with double line hearts quilted in the solid red centers!

The backing is white linen and the 3/8" applied indigo blue and white binding is the same fabric as used in the inner design. In excellent soft condition this quilt is a wonderfully graphic piece of art for use on a bed or on a wall. It has been professionally hand washed by Betsey and is ready to be sent to you on approval for viewing in the privacy of your home.
