CON HT34 Log Cabin Sunshine & Shadow Quilt

c.1870
78 x 78 (198.1 x 198.1 cm)
Litchfield, CT
$2,900

A wonderful piece of textile art in perfect unused condition, this antique cotton quilt in the Sunshine & Shadow pattern is on consignment from a collector as is its companion quilt (CON HT33). Pieced by hand from a wide variety of florals, stripes, plaids and calicos this quilt satisfies any antique fabric lover's desire for color and pattern. Made by the same hand as the quilt above, the maker chose an over dyed green calico cotton for her cabin blocks which distinguishes it from its companion. They would be stunning together in a bedroom. Log Cabin quilts are traditionally both pleasingly graphic and sophisticated in design. This quilter took this classic Log Cabin pattern and raised it to another level with the addition of solid Turkey red 5/8" square chimneys in every block paired with a solid blue square of the same size and a solid Turkey red log. The repetition and careful placement of color brings a sense of order to this quilt containing so much pattern and movement.

Diminutive log cabin blocks measure 5 3/4 x 5 3/4 inches and contain 1/2 to 5/8 inch wide logs. A scant 1/4 inch wide applied binding is in the same calico as used for the backing - madder, brown and white floral motifs on a stippled tan ground. See detail image. Hand quilted with 2 1/2 inch cross hatching throughout.

This is a striking and beautifully executed Log Cabin antique quilt in unused, perfect condition. Professionally hand washed by Betsey, she gave it its first ever bath. Ask us about seeing this quilt and/or its companion quilt on approval in the privacy of your home.
