CON SH2 Victorian Silk Crazy Quilt with Ice Cream Cone Border

c.1885
60 x 68 (152.4 x 172.7 cm)
PA
$7,200

Oh...the glory of the true Victorian silk Crazy Quilt when executed by the hand of a master needlewoman! This gorgeous quilt in perfect condition is a very fine example of its kind created during the heyday of Silk Victorian Crazy Quilts. Heavily embellished this work contains ribbonwork, appliques, couched work, metallic work, and raised embroidery as well as a wedding date of October 20, 1859. The quilt was made after that date - the maker may have been commemorating her own wedding date of years past.

Thirty 10 x 10 inch Crazy quilt blocks are arranged in a 5 x 6 array surrounded by a fabulous scallop edged border resembling ice cream cones. The border measures 4 inches wide with buttonhole edging on the scallops. Triangles formed by the black silk velvet ice cream cones are in a variety of beautiful silks and are themselves embellished with silk floss stitching. Individual works of art within the quilt include a felted wool Japanese fan applique with silk embellishment stitching, silk velvet leaf appliques, metallic thread couching and embroidered motifs, an embroidered peacock feather, sweet embroidered boy and girl, ribbonwork flowers, and raised turkey work florals, among others. Fabrics include high quality silks from dresses and cravats, silk gros grain ribbons and silk velvets, all in pristine condition. See detail images.

The backing is a stunning wholecloth gold silk quilted fabric, and the edges have been pillowcase edged to the buttonhole stitched ice cream cone border. We have the highly skilled maker’s name which will be provided to the buyer upon sale.

A sumptuous, and glorious work of art in perfect condition. Ask Betsey to see this quilt on approval for viewing in the privacy of your home.
