Q8237 Log Cabin Barn Raising Quilt with Bars Border

c.1865
66 x 66 (167.6 x 167.6 cm)
PA
SOLD

Log Cabins are traditionally both pleasingly graphic and sophisticated. Here is a fabulous Civil War era quilt full of high energy as well! This quilter took the classic Barn Raising pattern and raised it to another level with the clever arrangement of fabric color and pattern and the addition of multiple borders. Constructed in wool and wool challis in a multitude of hues in solids, plaids and prints the artist has successfully used numerous design elements to create a lively yet cohesive whole.

As the first focal point of this piece the center four log cabins are executed in a very deliberate palette of red and white. Center red chimneys unify the remaining log cabins, set in the barn raising pattern, with their extraordinary variety of colors and fabric designs. An outer frame consisting of a 3 inch bars border flanked by an interior 2 inch border of tan and red and an outside 1 ½ inch border in a warm brown brings the last unexpected and totally unique design element to this work of art. These elements combined bring a sense of energy and vitality, very carefully restrained – possibly a reflection of the artist in her time? The backing is an 1870’s fabric in brown and red with reverse ties throughout and an applied binding in ¼ inch black wool challis.

Warm, graphic and vibrant this piece of textile art in excellent condition is the perfect size for a magnificent wall display or would work equally well as a bed covering. Please ask Betsey for more details and to see this quilt on approval in the privacy of your home.
