Q8839 African American Bars Quilt, with Provenance

c.1918
Alabama
80 x 80 (203.2 x 203.2 cm)

What makes this quilt so amazing aside from its graphic appeal is that it was created by a woman born into slavery who lived for over 100 years. This quilt comes complete with family history and photos of the woman and her daughters who helped make it. Hand pieced throughout and hand quilted with white string stitched in loosely parallel lines it is a classic early twentieth century African American quilt.

There are traits that distinguish African American quilting in the first half of the 20th century from any other North American quilting style. The use of vertical piecing, enlarged graphics, and asymmetry hark back to African culture and textile style. This wonderful cotton bars quilt was created from clothing and other household items from the maker's everyday life. This quilt was used and lovingly cared for.

Provenance to go to the buyer upon sale. Professionally hand washed by Betsey, please call her for more information on this unique piece of African American art and history.
