Q8851 Indigo & White 9 Patch Steeplechase with Double Border
c.1865
80 x 80 (203.2 x 203.2 cm)
PA
$2,000

A glorious Civil War era indigo blue and white cotton quilt in excellent condition. This lovely antique quilt is comprised of just two fabrics: pristine white and deep indigo with tiny white polka dots. The two borders measure 1 1/8” wide each with triangle blocks in the corners of the indigo border. Nine patch blocks measure 2 7/8” square, the interior patches a scant 1 inch.

Quilting on this beautiful piece is stitched by hand with finely executed wreaths surrounding double line parallel lines in the white joining blocks, 3/4” cross hatching in the nine patch blocks, and double line parallel lines in the outer borders. Please see the detail images. The backing is a very fine white cotton with an applied 3/8” binding in the same white dots on indigo cotton.

This is a wonderful example of a popular pattern done exceptionally well from the precise piecing to the double borders and exquisite hand quilting. A must-have addition to a blue and white collection or a wonderful first piece and in excellent condition. Professionally hand washed by Betsey. Quilts are always sent on approval.
