CONHO47 Wool Challis Courthouse Steps Log Cabin Quilt

This mint condition Wool challis Log Cabin quilt is a beyond a treasure! Created from thousands of wool challis strips that measure apx. 1/2" in width. Each full block measures 11" square with the center chimney only 5/8" square!

We have dozens of different prints and what appears, black, gray, off white and brown challis are the only solid pieces and very, very few of those. The fabrics were and still are extremely expensive letting us know that the maker was part of a very wealthy family. When one studies the blocks one can see that all piecing is symmetrical...I do not believe I have another Wool challis Log Cabin quilt that was this pieced with as much planning. The care used in creating this amazing textile may be the reason that it was never used.

All piecing was executed by hand with a 3/8" separately applied binding finishing this masterpiece. The backing is an unusual fabric that would have been enough fabric to create another quilt...again adding to the proof of an affluent family.

The are already "sleeves" top and bottom so this quilt is ready to hang. If you use this quilt on a bed, the thin cotton sleeves will not add or detract.
