CONNJ1 Indigo and White Coverlet
c.1835
72 x 94 inches

The talent that went into weaving this coverlet is beyond my
comprehension. Created from Indigo dyed wool and natural color linen.
What I am not sure of is if all of these fibers were grown and raised at
home or purchased. At this time in New England so much of what we had
was created at home or traded with neighbors. We were a flax growing
area which was the plant that gives us linen.
The complicated designs in this coverlet are over the top and could only
be woven by a very gifted weaver. There is an 8" border that is as
complicated as the main body of the coverlet. There are flower
medallions surrounded by Chevron and zigzag designs. On each edge of the
border is a 1" wide zig-zag design with tiny buds.
The main body of the coverlet has medallions that measure 10" X 15".
Surrounding the medallions are abstract flowers, vines, ferns, leaves and
birds.
This coverlet is completely reversible as it is a summer/winter coverlet.
Hand washed using an organic product. This amazing coverlet is ready to
