CON PJ2 Antique Amish Checkerboard Quilt with Double Borders
c.1920
74 x 84 (188 x 213.4 cm)
Iowa
Was $2,900 Now $2,500

This is a wonderful example of Amish graphic textile art and has a definite abstract feel. The exuberance of the central checkerboard design is held in check by lovely double borders in deep, saturated medium blue (3" wide) and medium green (10" wide). Please note the outer green border does not show well online - it is a true, bright medium green. Color accuracy for the checkerboard pattern is excellent, however - please see detail images. Hand quilting includes feather vines in the outer border, outline stitching in the inner border and each inner square and rectangle accentuates the abstract feel of this quilt with an 'X' stitched corner to corner - see detail images.

Amish quilts are known for their solid colors, strong graphics and geometric designs. The fabrics used are the same as for their clothing. This quilt maker chose a great palette in all solid cottons and denim-like fabrics for her creation which is machine pieced and hand quilted. The backing is a solid deep black canvas weight cotton which showcases the maker's hand quilting. There is no batting between the pieced top and backing fabric. The back folds to the front and is treadle machine topstitched down to form the 5/8" black binding.

In excellent condition this unique and graphic quilt is a piece of textile art at home in any setting from antique to contemporary. Please contact us if you wish to view this quilt in the privacy of your home on approval. Professionally hand washed by Betsey.
