F803 Original Design Indigo Applique Wedding Quilt Fragment
c.1790-1810
32 x 71 inches each
New England
$3,900
Yes, this is costly, and I know this is a fragment of the original
quilt, however, it is one in a million!!
An original design created as a wedding present. Note the hearts on the
top, bottom and each side of the original appliqued design. Not sure if
you can see in the photos, but there are hearts quilted throughout the
quilt. The fabric is a very, very rare Early Indigo print...I believe a
block print. The white fabric is a very fine cotton while the backing is
a very fine linen. At this time many of the threads used for quilting
were also fine linen. The dots are a lighter Indigo, not white. The
applique stitches are so minuscule and perfect that they can hardly be
seen. All of these characteristics put together tell us that the quilt
was created by a woman from an affluent family.
The Oak Leaf, leaves and meandering vine are another indication of a
New England quilt. I know there are Oak trees in other areas of our
country, but it seems this is a symbol that shows up on many early
quilts of this era.
This textile is not just a quilt, but a major piece of art!
