This early Old Order Nebraska Amish quilt has been in my collection for almost 20 years. I purchased this Amish quilt from a curator's collection.

This late 19th century Amish quilt is a combination of patterns. Most of the fabric is a very very fine wool challis, however there are some blue squares that are actually made from denim. The pattern is an extended nine patch with a four patch center and a semi Irish chain, meaning a chain in only one direction. I believe the rich deep brown wool is home-dyed. The use of the different shades of blue indicate to me that all of the fabrics used in the creation of this quilt were not purchased for this project, but created by a frugal woman. Does the one peach colored square show humility? As in, God is perfect and we are not.

This loved early Amish quilt was created from approximately 7" blocks, every other block being solid. The pieced block is an extended nine patch with a four patch center. The pieced block is quilted in cross hatching, approximately 1-1/4" apart. The solid blocks are quilted with a large flower design. The corners of all blocks are connected with diagonal quilting approximately 1-1/2" apart. In addition to piecing, all blocks are symbolically connected. There is a 9-1/4" indigo blue wool challis border. The backing is turned over to the front and stitched down to create a 1/2" binding. The backing is a grayish blue heavy weight cotton. The borders are quilted in a large chain pattern.

This quilt is in complete original condition including original woven areas to weave where a repair was needed. The woven areas may have been executed 100 years ago. To me, this adds character, and I have chosen to leave them as is.

This old order Amish quilt is ready to be sent for your at home approval.
