Rose of Sharon Stuffed Applique Quilt
c.1855
91 x 91 (231.1 x 231.1 cm)
New England
$5,800

A wonderful creation displaying the maker’s superior skill with a needle and her love of perfection, order and design. She chose for her fabrics overdyed green, Turkey Red, and a fabulous double pink from the 1840's. Exquisitely stuffed and hand quilted using miniscule, perfect stitches. The border of swags and tassels represents a drawing room’s drapes and tiebacks.

Blocks are entirely English pieced; seam allowances are folded to the back and, with right sides together, two pieces are closely and minutely whip stitched together at the fold. This was a technique she ,or possibly her mother/grandmother, brought with her from England. The traditional hand piecing technique of quilters in America was a running or backstitch.

This quilt was a gift to the family of Robert Matthew Higgins, by his business partner Robert Metzger of Rutland, Vermont and has been preserved and loved within the family for generations. Mint condition (unused and unwashed). As with all our quilts this masterpiece can be shipped to you on approval for private review.
