Q9065 Ohio Star and Gothic Applique

c. 1870, with 1800 fabrics

This is a perfect display of Turkey red fabrics that date from c.1810 to c.1865. A truly amazing piece of art. A treasure for a person who likes graphics created with early fabrics. It would perfectly fit a queen size bed, however my choice would be to display it as a hanging art piece.

It has 9 inch blocks, 2 inch sashing and a 1/4 inch border. The diamonds in the stars have 2-3/4 inch sides. The entire quilt is cross hatched. The quilting does not stand out at all. The stitches used for the applique are some of the tiniest I have ever seen. It is all pieced, quilted, and appliqued by hand. The binding is turned over from the back to the front and hand stitched. the whole cloth backing fabric is absolutely beautiful. This tells us that the creator was of comfortable means because she could have used that fabric for another entire quilt. Professionally hand washed by Betsey.
