We have some of the most incredible, creative, elaborate over the top quilting that I have ever seen. We have wreaths, stippling (stippling means there is so much quilting that those ares look stuffed), feathers, medallions, echo quilting, double line quilting, as well as all pieces are outline quilted. All stitches are tiny and even and the amount is mind boggling!

The Prince's Feather pattern was created to replicate and give honor to the English Prince of Wales. This amazing piece of Textile art has taken the pattern to another level with this original design border. There are thirteen originally designed appliqued motifs surrounding the very graphic Prince's Feather designs. All together there are 17 appliqued motifs, with a few repeats. The designs may be easily seen from a picture, but the quilting may only really be appreciated by having the quilt with you.

We can enter into a whole other discussion on the sociological aspect of this quilt. The artist who created this amazing textile art must have come from an affluent family. The cost of this fabric would have been prohibitive to a working class family. Also the time put into this...thousands of hours of "free" time not available to most families. Affluent families schooled their daughters in the arts and this attribute was part of their eligibility to marry the "proper" man! Boy, has the world changed!

Another way of knowing the social status of the maker is that there is a separately applied binding put on with the use of a treadle machine... a rare and expensive machine to own. After all this work ..why use a machine for the binding? Women did not brag at that time. By using the machine she was letting people know about her possession!

Sunning, sophisticated, 100 plus on quilting, graphically wonderful and perfectly executed...Yes, this is truly an over the top antique quilt... also in perfect condition.
