Q9316 Early 19th Century Ohio Stars Quilt

Turkey Red Fabrics were some of the most highly prized and costly of the
Pre Civil War cotton fabrics. These fabrics cannot be reproduced today.
I have inventory pictures of these early Turkey Red Calicoes and this
print is among those pictured. One of the topics I lecture on is the
process of creating Turkey Red Fabrics. These are the fabrics of upper
class families. Quilts are a study of sociology as well as art,
design, creativity and sewing ability.
This stunning quilt, created in block formation, is simple in design,
but rich in history and fabrics. The blocks have sides measuring 7-2/4",
the joining sashing is 1-1/2" wide and the binding measures a mere
1/4". The triangles in the stars have 2-1/4" sides.
Backing is a natural color linen. possibly home spun. Almost all early
New England quilts have linen as the backing.....some homespun, some
home woven, some purchased from England.
All pieces and strips are outline quilted with tiny stitches. As this
quilt predates the sewing machine being in public use, we may deduce
correctly that all sewing was executed by hand.
Now hand washed using an organic product and ready to send for your
