Q9328 Crazy Quilt
c.1895
70 x 80 inches
Maine
$1,400
This summer weight Victorian Crazy Quilt is exceptionally crazy! The
reason I am saying this is because of the construction method. Usually
the quilts are pieced with same size squares and then sewn together to
create the full size quilt..or fabrics sewn onto a large piece of fabric
before being embellished. This woman created 3 different size little
quilts and then sewed them together, creating the quilt you see here.
There are dozens of wonderful embroidery designs which I believe were
executed by the same quilter.
Victorian crazy quilts were the rage from 1880 to 1900 and were created
in wool, wool Challis, silks, cotton, cotton Velvet and silk velvet. This
quilt was created from wool, wool Challis, cotton velvet and silk
velvet. The backing is an earlier floral design of roses and
chrysanthemums in cotton. There isn't a batting so this quilt becomes
summer weight. Now you can use it all year...in the summer as is..in the
winter over other bed coverings.
I feel this woman had a fun personality and created a very happy, folksy
Crazy Quilt.
