QT812A Mosaic Quilt Top

This pattern is the precursor to the Grandmother's Flower Garden
Pattern. This, as far as I know, is the only pattern that cannot be
pieced by machine. Individual hexagon pieces are paper foundation pieced
and then sewn together with the English piecing method. Because of the
piecing method, the pieces should not come apart and therefore the quilt
can be tied instead of quilted. We are showing you a closeup of the
backing so you may see the method.
There are a huge variety of fabrics dating from C.1860 to C.1885. This
is a pattern that was always perfect for scrap bag fabrics. Each piece
measures 1-1/2", with the paper still inside each piece....sometimes one
can find a date on these scraps.
Presumably this was to be a larger quilt. Well, as it turns out this is
a perfect size for a wall-hanging..a sophisticated piece of textile art 🙂
