QT906 Log Cabin Sunshine and Shadows Quilt Top

c.1875

This wonderfully graphic Log Cabin quilt top is comprised of foundation pieced 10 inch blocks. The "logs" measure between 1/2" and 3/4" in width. The center chimneys measure apx. 2-1/2" square. What is unusual is that some of the chimneys are red while others are blue with one burgundy chimney in silk velvet.....I wonder what was the significance.

The fabrics used here mostly from the 1870's with earlier fabrics. All fabrics are cotton with the one exception of one chimney. Used here are a wonderful array of blue and brown darker calicoes. The lighter calicoes are an array of tans, blues, blacks and reds. What a study in that era's calico prints.

All piecing was hand executed and as I previously stated, using the foundation method. This method means that one can finish the quilt using the"tying" method vs. quilting. When I found this top it was a tied quilt..a very fat tied quilt...I have removed the backing and the batting. We now have a wonderfully executed Log Cabin top ready to be finished using either method. This stunning quilt top will be relatively easy to finish.
